A Love Letter to CDMX

How Mexico City Inspired Vela’s Design and Vibe

Design with Emotion, Not Just Aesthetics

At Vela, design is more than aesthetics — it’s emotion. We wanted our guests to feel the warmth, history, and story that CDMX design tells, with that timeless juxtaposition of old and new. From the start, we set out to create a room that could shift and evolve with the evening: a beautiful space for dinner, rich with detail and intimacy, that gradually softens into something velvety and seductive — a place for cocktails, DJs, and late-night rhythm.

Mexico City: A World-Class Muse

Mexico City is one of the world’s most inspiring cities, from its dining rooms to its dance floors. The art, architecture, and hospitality culture are both layered and alive. Paying homage to that meant building something from the heart. Vela is a love letter to CDMX — born from passion, reverence, and an obsession with experience.

Designing for the Shift

At Vela, we designed the space to evolve with the night. As the dinner hour winds down, the room begins to change — the lights dip, the music expands, and a new energy takes hold. The same textures and materials that ground you during dinner begin to sparkle in the evening glow. It’s a space made to shift — from toasts over tacos to mezcal-fueled movement.

The Details You Don’t See — But Feel

Some of the most intentional design choices aren’t the ones you see — they’re the ones you feel. The curve of a chair that invites you to lean in. The soft diffusion of candlelight across stone and brass. The way the sound travels from the DJ booth without overpowering conversation. It’s a layered approach: subtle, sensory, and deeply considered.

Vela isn’t a replica of Mexico City. It’s a love letter to its vibrancy, reimagined in River North. Our design tells a story — and every night, our guests become part of it.
